What is your project and why did you choose it?

I am researching the impact of the war on Ukraine's economic development. The main focus is on the adaptation of transportation and agriculture to the conditions of hostilities, missile strikes, and naval blockade. An important dimension is the study of the impact of geopolitics on Ukraine's economic ties with the world. My main object of research are the sea and river ports of the country.   I look at the "windows of opportunity" of accelerating the development of those ports in the country that have a unique geopolitical position on the border with NATO.

What brought your interest to the region?

I have been studying the economic geography of Ukraine and its economic relations for over 20 years. The country has undergone great changes during this time, caused by the restoration of an export liberal economy of the raw material type. Ukraine has returned in its economic development to the model it had before the First World War.

Ivan Savchuk was trained as a geographer at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Master's degree). He received his doctorate in economic geography at the Institute of Geography, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. Before the full-scale invasion he worked at the National Defense University of Ukraine.
